Founded in 1844 the village of Carp offers all the charm of a rural community yet is just minutes from urban Ottawa along the 417 highway. It is believed the village takes its name from the Carp River which runs through the town. Pioneer records indicate there never were any Carp in the river leaving the origins of its name a mystery.

Carp is home to many popular local attractions like the Carp Fair which was founded in 1880 and is held every year in September. The Fair is a 22-acre extravaganza that includes livestock judging, a horse show and all the bounty of an Ottawa Valley harvest. The Carp Farmers’ Market is the largest producer based farmers market in Eastern Ontario and is held every year from May to October here you can find crafts, produce and baked goods. The market was originally the brainchild of Hildegarde Anderson. A native of Saskatchewan, Ms. Anderson remembered the success of the farmers’ markets from her youth. Feeling a prairie style market could provide her community with many social and economic benefits Ms. Anderson set about making her dream a reality. On June 23 1990 the Carp Farmers’ Market opened to great success making Ms. Anderson’s dream a reality. The market continues to thrive to this day.

The Diefenbunker, a ‘secret’ 4 storey nuclear fall-out shelter, was completed in 1961 and is one of Canada’s most intriguing tourist attractions. This piece of Canada’s cold war history was used in the Tom Clancy film ‘The Sum of All Fears’.

The Ottawa international air show frequently calls Carp home. Held in June this show is one of the Ottawa areas most popular summer attractions and is often held at the Carp Airport.

Although Carp is home to some of Ontario’s popular tourist attractions it is predominately a farming community. In 2001 the city of Ottawa amalgamated meaning the village is now governed as part of the city of Ottawa, many of its residents still use Carp as their mailing address however.

The Carp area abounds with recreational opportunities, including seven golf courses and Fitzroy Provincial Park, and is an excellent jump-off point for hiking and snowmobiling on area trails. When your day is over, relax at one of Carp's unique heritage pubs or stay at one of the local bed and breakfasts.
